Cedar vs Pine Fence: Which Wood Is Best for Texas?

Feb 2026

Choosing the right wood for your fence is one of the most important decisions you'll make. Cedar and pine are the two most popular options in North Texas — here's how they compare on durability, cost, and appearance.

Natural Rot Resistance

Cedar contains natural oils (thujaplicins) that make it naturally resistant to rot, decay, and insect damage. Pine must be pressure-treated with chemical preservatives to achieve similar protection. If you want a chemical-free, naturally durable fence, cedar is the clear winner.

Cost Breakdown

Pine fences typically cost 20-30% less than cedar upfront — roughly $20-$32 per linear foot installed versus $28-$45 for cedar. However, cedar requires less maintenance over its lifetime, so the total cost of ownership is often closer than the upfront price suggests.

Appearance & Aging

Cedar has a rich, warm reddish-brown tone that weathers to a beautiful silver-gray if left unstained. Pine has a lighter, yellowish color and the green tint from pressure treatment fades within a year. Both look great when stained, but cedar has a more premium, natural look out of the box.

Durability in Texas Heat

Texas heat, UV exposure, and humidity cycles are tough on wood. Cedar handles these conditions better than pine because its natural oils resist moisture absorption and expansion/contraction. Pressure-treated pine can warp and twist more in extreme Texas temperatures.

Maintenance Requirements

Both woods benefit from staining every 3-5 years. Cedar is more forgiving if you delay maintenance — it won't rot as quickly as untreated pine. Pine fences that lose their protective treatment are vulnerable to rapid decay in our humid climate.

Lifespan Comparison

A well-maintained cedar fence lasts 15-25 years in North Texas. Pressure-treated pine lasts 12-18 years with proper care. For homeowners who want the longest-lasting fence with the least maintenance, cedar is our top recommendation.

Our Recommendation

At Landeros Fence & Construction, we recommend cedar for most residential privacy fences in North Texas. The slightly higher upfront cost pays for itself in durability, appearance, and lower maintenance. For budget-conscious projects where cost is the top priority, pressure-treated pine is still a solid choice — we build great fences with both.
