How to Build a Backyard Pickleball Court in Texas

Dec 2025

Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in America, and more Texas homeowners are building courts in their backyards. Here's a complete guide to planning, building, and fencing your own pickleball court.

Space Requirements

A regulation pickleball court is 20 feet wide by 44 feet long. However, you need additional space around the court for player movement — the recommended total playing area is 30 feet by 60 feet minimum. For a comfortable backyard setup, plan for at least 34 by 64 feet including fence setback.

Surface Options

The most common surfaces for backyard courts are concrete and asphalt. Concrete costs $6-$12 per square foot and lasts 25+ years. Asphalt costs $3-$7 per square foot but may need resurfacing sooner. Both surfaces should be finished with an acrylic sport coating (like PickleMaster or SportMaster) for proper ball bounce and traction.

Fencing Your Court

Court fencing serves two purposes: containing balls and defining the playing area. Standard pickleball court fencing is 10 feet tall using vinyl-coated black chain link. Black coating provides better ball visibility during play. Landeros Fence installs commercial-grade court fencing with proper gate placement for player entry.

Orientation and Placement

Orient your court north-south to minimize sun glare during morning and evening play. Avoid placing the court under trees — falling leaves and sap create slippery surfaces. Position the court on level ground or plan for grading to ensure proper drainage away from the playing surface.

Lighting for Evening Play

LED court lighting extends your playing hours and is especially valuable during Texas summers when evening play is more comfortable. Mount lights on 16-20 foot poles outside the fence line. Budget approximately $2,000-$5,000 for a basic 2-pole LED setup that provides adequate court illumination.

Net and Line Marking

A regulation pickleball net is 36 inches high at the sidelines and 34 inches at the center. Portable net systems cost $150-$400 and work great for backyard courts. Court lines should be painted with acrylic sport paint in white or contrasting colors. Line dimensions follow USA Pickleball standards.

Total Cost Estimate

A complete backyard pickleball court in North Texas typically costs $15,000-$35,000 depending on surface, fencing, and features. Breakdown: surface prep and concrete ($8,000-$15,000), sport coating ($2,000-$4,000), fencing ($2,400-$4,800), net system ($200-$400), and optional lighting ($2,000-$5,000).
