What to Do When a Storm Damages Your Fence

Nov 2025

North Texas storms bring high winds, hail, and even tornadoes that can destroy fences overnight. Here's a step-by-step guide for what to do after storm damage — from insurance claims to repair vs replacement decisions.

Document the Damage Immediately

Before touching anything, take photos and video of all damage from multiple angles. Document the entire fence line, not just the worst sections. This documentation is critical for insurance claims. Include photos of any debris, fallen trees, or objects that caused the damage.

Check Your Homeowner's Insurance

Most homeowner's insurance policies cover fence damage from storms, falling trees, and wind. Review your policy or call your agent. Key things to know: your deductible amount, whether you have a separate wind/hail deductible, and whether the policy covers full replacement cost or depreciated value.

Filing an Insurance Claim

File your claim as soon as possible after the storm. Provide your photo documentation, a description of the damage, and the date of the storm event. Your insurance company will send an adjuster to assess the damage. Having a written estimate from a fence contractor before the adjuster visit can help ensure fair compensation.

Repair vs Full Replacement

If less than 30% of your fence is damaged, repair is usually the best option — it's faster and cheaper. If more than 30% is damaged, or if the undamaged sections are old and deteriorating, full replacement often makes more financial sense. A new fence gives you uniform appearance and resets the maintenance clock.

Emergency Securing

If sections of your fence are down and you have pets or children, you need a temporary solution fast. Zip-tie fallen panels to posts, use temporary construction fencing, or stack the debris to block gaps. This keeps your yard secure while you arrange for permanent repair.

Beware of Storm Chasers

After major storms, out-of-town contractors flood the area offering cheap fence work. Many are unlicensed, uninsured, and do substandard work. Stick with local, established contractors who will be here long after the storm. Landeros Fence & Construction is Valley View-based and has been serving this community — we're not going anywhere.

Timeline for Repairs

After a major storm, fence contractors are in high demand. Expect 1-3 weeks for scheduling depending on storm severity. Emergency repairs (making the fence functional) can usually be done within a few days. Full replacement may take 2-4 weeks to schedule and 1-3 days to complete.
